<p> 要使发电机正常的发电，发电机转子磁极必须有一定的磁场强度。但是任何发电机或励磁机在刚启动时，磁极剩磁都很弱，因此在发电机旋转起来以后，其磁场要经过一个由弱变强的过程，才能在空载状态建立额定电压，这个过程就是自励磁过程。能够自励的条件之一是发电机转子转速要达到额定转速，而且要有一定的剩磁，条件之二是流过磁极线圈的电流必须能加强剩磁，而不是削弱它。</p>
